Chiara Bernardini

Senior Research Scientist

Chiara Bernardini is a Senior Research Scientist at the Notre Dame Turbomachinery Laboratory (NDTL) where she currently leads multiple research and development projects for compressor and turbine testing. Dr. Bernardini is the program lead for the 10MW test cell at NDTL, leading all design, build, and commissioning efforts. She is the technical expert for the NDTL airplant and is currently working on developing additional lab capabilities, such as hypersonics, high-temperature materials testing, combustion testing, and small engine test capabilities. Dr. Bernardini also serves as the test director for compressor and turbine rigs in the 5MW and 10MW test cells.

Dr. Bernardini completed her Ph.D. in Energy Engineering at the University of Florence (Italy) in 2010, with an emphasis on active flow control computational analyses. She received a European Marie Curie Fellowship that enabled her to do postdoctoral work at the Ohio State University (OSU) where she continued her research in experimental flow control for low-pressure turbines and external aerodynamics in low speed wind tunnels. At OSU, she designed and built a transonic cascade to continue her research in turbine blade aerodynamics, integrating it with computational fluid dynamics exploration.

Dr. Bernardini is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Notre Dame.
